The Enfield Local Studies Library have been very
helpful: they suggest that Jacob lived
in Lower Edmonton (where the main settlement was, then). He certainly did not live in Southgate
Edmonton was sadly no
healthier than Enfield. It was not heavily built up, not really
developing until the late 19th century.
However, it was on the main road out of London.
That road carried disease, just as it carried trade.
Jacob died in 1739, he was 51. Elizabeth
did not outlive him for long: she died in 1741, almost certainly of smallpox
(see below).
Jacob and Elizabeth had eight children:
Mary - died in 1741 (aged 19) and buried on the same day as her
mother (hence my deduction of smallpox). Another of the name died in infancy.
Elizabeth - three of the name died in infancy.
Jacob - see later post
Philip - died infancy
